Most homes have a list of small jobs that never quite get done. For example, a shelf that needs putting up, a door that sticks or a bath that needs resealing. On their own, none of them seem worth a call-out. However, put them together and one visit can clear the lot. So grouping jobs is the smartest way to use handyman services.

Jobs that suit handyman services

Most handyman services cover a wide range of small jobs. For example:

Fixing and hanging

  • Shelves, curtain poles and blinds
  • Mirrors, pictures and TV wall brackets

Doors and windows

  • Sticking doors, loose handles and hinges
  • Draught strips around doors and windows

Kitchens and bathrooms

  • Resealing baths, showers and sinks
  • Replacing loose tiles and fixing cupboard doors

Furniture and outside

  • Flat-pack furniture
  • Fence panels, gates and small shed repairs

When you need a specialist instead of handyman services

However, some jobs are not handyman jobs. For your safety, and to stay within the rules, a qualified trade must do them:

  • Gas: a Gas Safe registered engineer must do any work on gas appliances or pipes.
  • Electrics: also, a registered electrician should handle new circuits, a new fuse box and most work in bathrooms.
  • Structural work: finally, get proper advice before anyone takes out a wall.

With Propfix, you don’t need to work out which is which. Instead, just tell us what needs doing and we’ll send the right person. For more on staying safe with electrics at home, see Electrical Safety First.

How to get the most from a handyman visit

First, write everything down, even the tiny jobs. Then take a photo of each one. Also, measure anything you want to hang or fit. After that, have the items ready, such as the shelf or the blind. Finally, clear the space around each job before the trade arrives.

Why booking handyman services in one go saves money

Every visit has travel and set-up time. So if you book five small jobs separately, you pay for that five times. Book them together, however, and you pay for it once. As a result, you also get one day of disruption instead of five.

Handyman services across Harrow, Ruislip, Uxbridge and Watford

Propfix sends vetted, self-employed trades to homes and rental properties across our area. To start, upload your list and photos on our Get a quote page. We’ll then price the work before anything starts, so there are no surprises. If we need to visit first to quote, there’s an £89 booking fee (including VAT). However, it comes off the bill if you go ahead.

Handyman services: frequently asked questions

How much do handyman services cost?

It depends on the jobs and how long they take. Most trades price by the job or by the hour. Either way, we give you a price before any work starts.

Do handymen bring their own tools?

Yes. However, you may need to supply the item, such as a blind or a shelf, unless you’ve asked us to get it.

Can a handyman do electrical work?

Only very simple jobs, such as swapping a light fitting like for like. For anything more, use a registered electrician.
